We Built a Coronavirus Data Tracker | Here's How You Can Too

In February of 2020, in the middle of the coronavirus crisis in China, 300+ programming newbies gathered online and learned how to build a WeChat application from scratch. Together, they made a real-time tracker of the coronavirus stats using a public API. Here's how you can build one too.

At the peak of the coronavirus epidemic in China, most businesses closed their doors and told employees to stay at home. Streets emptied, gatherings were canceled, and the internet exploded with a billion people suffering from boredom.

During this time, the Le Wagon China team took our offline workshops, online.

Leveraging WeChat groups and local streaming services like Qianliao (千聊), we were able to teach hundreds of online learners the basics of Data Science, Web Development, and the benefits of learning how to code.

By far one of our most successful workshops was when we taught students how to build a WeChat Mini Program that tracked the spread of the coronavirus.

We called it, the COVID-19 Data Tracker. 🦠

Students from across the country followed along as we connected a boilerplate WeChat Mini Program to a live API. Many succeeded in connecting the pieces, others customized the design of their application, a few even improved on the data's visualization.

Now we're giving learners from across the world the ability to join along. We recorded this live workshop and published it on YouTube.

To get started, you'll need a Windows or Mac computer. Open up our walkthrough, play the video, and good luck.

Check it out and tell us what you think! 🙌🏻

Film maker turned Founder & CTO - why creativity is key to coding products

Before Le Wagon I was a freelance film director. I was primarily working on branded content for global brands such as Adidas, YouTube, Ebay, Booking.com and Pinterest. I wanted to combine my knowledge of storytelling and technology, and had an idea for an app about a year ago, and that's what led me to the bootcamp!
