Learning to code remotely: Loris’ story

Meet Loris, a current student at our remote Data Science Bootcamp. After spending 2 years studying IoT at university, he was frustrated that he had only learned theory and barely had any practical experience. Fast forward six months, he is about to graduate from our Data Science Bootcamp. Discover how this university student managed to upskill!
Summary
"The remote experience with Le Wagon is fantastic! The possibility of following the Bootcamp from Italy and being in contact with so many people from all over the world is of enormous value. Everything was organized in the smallest details. It seemed like I was physically present even if I was only connected with a camera and a microphone".

Hi Loris, can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Loris and I come from a small town near Venice (Italy). I began to get passionate about the IT world during high school, I started creating an eCommerce for a dropshipping business that I ran together with a classmate of mine. This passion continued when I discovered the financial world and started studying programming languages like Python and Java on my own to create algorithms to invest my money.

What were you doing before you joined Le Wagon?

About 3 years ago I decided to join the Internet of Things faculty at the University of Udine to study this world in depth.

When I first discovered Le Wagon, it was a summer evening in 2021 while I was working for a hotel (I worked every summer to pay for my studies). I remember that I was immediately struck by the teaching model. At that time I was quite frustrated because after 2 years of university studies I couldn't find great value in what I was studying and it was all too theoretical for me.

This is why I decided to give it a try and try to join Le Wagon, choosing the path of Data Science. I must say that I could never have made a better choice! Without a doubt one of the best experiences of my entire life.

Did you already have any coding knowledge before joining the Bootcamp?

At university, I had already studied the theoretical foundations of the world of Data Science and Machine Learning. This world immediately thrilled me because nowadays you can read the world through data. Through digitalization, data is increasingly becoming fundamental and sought after in every field and knowing how to extract value is the real key to competitiveness.

With data, we can make analyzes, market research, understand behaviours and also predict future events! Just think that in 2021 alone 74 zettabytes of data were produced globally!

What have been the best parts throughout the Bootcamp for you (so far)?

The best parts of the Bootcamp are definitely the challenges! They are essential to see if you really understood the topics. Being able to immediately put everything we learned into practice is a great way to make our brains able to memorize new concepts effectively.

Then working in a group with people from all over the world and always having the help of teachers has an indescribable value.

Did you face any difficulties throughout the Bootcamp, and if so, how did you overcome them?

Having already had a good initial preparation, I did not have great difficulties during the Bootcamp although the topics became more and more complex after a short time. Surely motivation and passion helped me a lot and then after each lecture I created personal schemes with all the necessary theory, logic, and code in order to facilitate the memorization and development of the challenges.

However, the slides and the support of the teachers are fantastic (without forgettingStackoverflow, Medium, TowardsDataScience)!

Can you tell us about your experience in the remote format?

Before COVID, I never even thought about taking a course that would last six months online. After following my first university lessons from home, I realized that it could undoubtedly be a very valuable resource.

The fact of being able to have the lessons recorded so that you can review them as many times as you want and being able to stop the video is truly a turning point. Many times at university while taking notes you risk losing important concepts while the professor explains because you don't have the time to do both things at the same time.

The remote experience with Le Wagon is fantastic! The possibility of following the Bootcamp from Italy and being in contact with so many people from all over the world is of enormous value. Everything was organized in the smallest details. It seemed like I was physically present even if I was only connected with a camera and a microphone.

What are you planning to do once the Bootcamp is over?

In March 2022, as soon as the Bootcamp ends, I will start a new specialization course in Artificial Intelligence with The Politecnico of Milan and Microsoft - even if I have already received several job offers. I will continue to study this world more deeply, also integrating the part of business and laws such as those of privacy that regulate it. I will also carry on my Youtube channel where I teach programming and I will start bringing new content regarding the AI world!

Maybe in the future, I will also follow the Web Development Bootcamp, who knows!

If you have one piece of advice to share with someone that's thinking of doing the remote Bootcamp, what would it be?

Surely do not be frightened by the fact that the Bootcamp is carried out remotely, because everything is perfectly organized and, as I said, the fact that you can also have pre-recorded video lessons available whenever you want in addition to the slides is pure gold!

Second, but perhaps most important: do not take all the study material Le Wagon asks you to study before starting the Bootcamp (Prep-Work) lightly. Especially if you do not have great programming knowledge and have never seen other languages besides Python, study and deepen everything very well!

Review the basic mathematics required, remember that computer science and mathematics go hand in hand! Also, start writing your first programs in Python, see the main libraries used in the world of Data Science and try and get a minimum knowledge in Web Development like in Html or CSS!

I would like to end by saying: You cannot even imagine what you will be able to learn in so few months, you will be amazed at yourself! At the end of the bootcamp, you will have met so many new people, you will be able to think more logically and attentively and above all, a new world will open up in front of you! As Le Wagon will always tell you: "Trust the process!"

Thank you, Loris!
